Gladioli 'Lakeland' (Large-flowered)
Gladioli are perennials that grow from corms. They have a fan of sword-shaped leaves, and spires of funnel-shaped, showy flowers in a wide range of colours. They are popular in cottage-style gardens, or at the back of borders, where they give height and colour. They also make good cut flowers. Corms should be lifted in winter before frosts and replanted in Spring, on sand if your soil is not free draining. 'Lakeland' is a tender perennial with sword-shaped, dark grey-green leaves and a slender, erect spike bearing funnel-shaped, lavender flowers in summer.

Gladioli do best in well drained soil in a sunny position. As soon as the soil is workable, prepare it for planting. Dig some well rotted manure into the soil. Rake bone meal into the surface at 4oz per square meter. Improve heavy or too-light soil by working in plenty of peat.. Plant the corms 4 inches deep in heavy soil, 6 inches deep in light soil from early spring. In heavy soil, add some sharp sand to help drainage. 3 or 4 fortnightly plantings of the same variety will provide blooms through the summer.
