Hedychium Spicatum
Himalayan Spiked Ginger
In autumn its delicate and sweetly-scented creamish-white to pale yellow flowers have a coral apricot-pink colouring towards the base and are held aloft on the flowerspike about 3-4 feet from ground level. Root hardy if mulched well. New:Ginger Lilies are flowering, perennial, rhizomatous plants with stout, reed-like stems which carry lanceolate sheathing leaves in two parallel ranks. The stems are topped with spikes of orchid-like flowers that are often fragrant. Gingers vary from frost hardy to tender green-house or conservatory plants, and protection from cold will help even hardy varieties to flower, so a solution in cold areas is to grow in containers, and move the containers outdoors in the warmer months. Wet conditions are sometimes a worse enemy than cold, so make sure the plants are going to be protected from very wet conditions, and that the soil in which they are grown is very free-draining. 'Hedychium Spicatum' is one of the hardiest of the hedychiums, and one of the most reliable to flower. The fragrant creamy-white flowers have a coral pink splash towards the base, and are held high on the flower spike, about 3-4 feet above ground level.
