The tender, evergreen species such as H. rosa-sinensis, are popular conservatory or house plants in temperate climates. These plants require winter protection in these cooler regions and can be grown as pot plants. The hardy species such as H. syriacus are suitable for annual or mixed borders. 'Social Butterfly' is a 'Hollywood' Hibiscus, a tender, woody shrub, with large showy flowers, that fade from yellow to pink to a red center. Leaves are green alternate, ovate to lanceolate with lobed margin.
