Hippeastrum psittacinum

Hippeastrum (Species) Parrot Amaryllis

Amaryllis is commonly used as a name for cultivars of the Hippeastrum genus, sold mainly as flowering bulbs, particularly in late autumn for flowering at Christmas in the northern hemisphere. These large bulbs are related to Amaryllis, but have been cultivated to grow indoors and bloom in Winter months. The colours and shape of the flowers are more varied than the outdoor Amaryllis. They have strap-like leaves and very large, colourful, trumpet-shaped flowers atop a leafless stem. Hippeastrum psittacinum (the Parrot Amaryllis) is from eastern and southern Brazil and has leaves, up to 8, strap like, to 45cm in length and reaches a height of 60 cm. Flowers are pale green with crimson stripes, and wavy crimson margins.

Flowering

From Late Autumn TO Late Autumn

If planted in late autumn, flowers will be on show in time for Christmas

Propagation

From Late Summer TO Early Autumn

Remove off sets and replant.

Planting Season

From Late Autumn TO Mid Spring

Plant bulbs just below the surface in containers indoors, this is so that they are easier to move inside in the winter, place outside in a sunny or partially shaded site after all danger of frost has gone. For indoor plants, plant in late autumn for flowers in time for Christmas
