They have simple leaves with scalloped edges, with small leafy kidney-shaped or round outgrowth at the base. The flowers are in flat-topped or rounded clusters. Some hydrocotyles are invasive.

Flowers occur sporadically, in clusters that form an umbel. Each flower is very small and consists of 5 white petals, but many flowers occur together in a cluster.
