Broad-leaved silver holly in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata'

Broad-leaved silver holly

The genus Ilex, commonly called holly, can be found throughout the world in both temperate and subtropical regions. It includes species of trees, shrubs, and climbers, with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. They are slow-growing plants which can grow to 25m tall. The type species is the European holly Ilex aquifolium. This is known as the common or English holly and has shiny, dark green foliage with yellow margins. It is self fertile and so produces berries without a male variety being present although having a male variety nearby can increase berry production. 'Argentea Marginata' produces masses of bright red berries in autumn to winter and sports spiny, silver-margined, dark green leaves, purplish-pink when young. This makes an excellent, evergreen specimen tree for a sunny, medium-sized garden.
