Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil'
Japanese Holly 'Sky Pencil'
The genus Ilex, commonly called holly, can be found throughout the world in both temperate and subtropical regions. It includes species of trees, shrubs, and climbers, with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. They are slow-growing plants which can grow to 25m tall. The type species is the European holly Ilex aquifolium. Japanese Holly 'Sky Pencil' has a columnar form, with simple ovate leaves, and, in late Spring or early Summer, rather insignificant small cream flowers that are followed by black berries. This is a female tree that needs a male tree to pollinate in order to produce fruit - but this holly is usually grown for its shape, rather than for the berries. Makes a good hedging plant
