The genus Ilex, commonly called holly, can be found throughout the world in both temperate and subtropical regions. It includes species of trees, shrubs, and climbers, with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. They are slow-growing plants which can grow to 25m tall. The type species is the European holly Ilex aquifolium. 'Nellie Stevens' has emerald green, spiney foliage and provides a long lasting crop of red to orange berries (unless the birds discover them!).

Propagating by cuttings

From Late Summer TO Mid Autumn

Semi hard wood cuttings are taken from the current years growth from late summer to mid autumn the bottom of the cuttings is hard and soft on the top. With a sharp knife take a cutting of about 14 cms, remove lowest leaves, dip end into rooting hormone, and place round the edge of a pot filled with a suitable compost, water well, they must remain moist till rooted, place under glass but in semi shade.

Small white flowers appear in Spring (male and female usually on separate plants) and, on female plants only, are followed by showy red berries in autumn
