Justicia Aurea

King's Crown/yellow jacobinia

The Yellow Jacobinia is an evergreen shrub that has huge, dark green leaves and the flower is similar in appearance to the Brazilian Plume plant. The long terminal spikes are carried from late summer to early winter. Keep the buds forming by removing faded flowerheads promptly. Justicia aurea can be propagated from 10cm cuttings taken in spring and potted up under heat. If left to its own devices, it will reach a height of around 1.5-2m, but ideally it should be pruned back hard in early spring to produce a good compact plant.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Justicia should be grown in rich, evenly moist but well drained garden soil and planted where they will be in partial to full shade in the heat of the day. Extremes in water – wet or dry and very cool temperatures will cause loss of leaves. Intolerant of even a light frost, where not hardy grow in containers, greenhouse or as annuals.

Propagation by seed

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Justicia Aurea can be propagated indoors from seeds. Justicia seeds require light for germination, so do not cover them up! Maintain a temperature of 70° within the growing medium. Germination takes 20-25 days.

Propogation by cuttings

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Justicia aurea can be propagated from 10cm cuttings taken in spring and potted up under heat.
