Compact Texas Silverleaf in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Leucophyllum frutescens compactum

Compact Texas Silverleaf

'Texas Barometer Bush' is a drought tolerant evergreen shrub with lavender blooms in the Summer. Commonly known as Texas sage, it is not a true sage. It requires minimal water, is easily shaped into hedges, and blooms over the entire surface. A number of popular cultivars are available. 'Compactum' is, as the name suggests, a compact cultivar, with large purple-pink to violet-pink, tubular, lipped flowers that are loved by pollinators.

Propagation by seed

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

Sow seed in situ in Spring in full or partial sun, in well-draining soil

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Easily grown in alkaline, gravelly, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Add dolomitic limestone to acidic soils. Plants thrive in gritty soils with minimal moisture. Sharp drainage is essential.
