Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red'
Dog-hobble 'Curly Red'
Leucothoe is an evergreen broadleaf shrub, native to the USA. It is easy to grow in most soils, as long as the soil isn't alkaline. The leaves are glossy, and the flowers, which are usually white, are small, dangling and bell-shaped. Moist conditions are needed, and this is a shrub that does well in shade or partial shade. It will tolerate sunny conditions as long as there is plenty of water. 'Curly Red' has a rounded bushy habit, with crinkled curled foliage with a red/purple tint in Autumn, pink-green in summer.
