Leucothoe axillaris 'Little Flames'
Dog-hobble 'Little Flames'
Leucothoe is an evergreen broadleaf shrub, native to the USA. It is easy to grow in most soils, as long as the soil isn't alkaline. The leaves are glossy, and the flowers, which are usually white, are small, dangling and bell-shaped. Moist conditions are needed, and this is a shrub that does well in shade or partial shade. It will tolerate sunny conditions as long as there is plenty of water. 'Little Flames' has a low, rounded bushy habit, Leucothoe axillaris 'Little Flames' fiery red new shoots in Spring, maturing to green, and dainty clusters of white flowers in Spring. In Autumn the foliage turn to red.
