Loosestrife is a fast growing, evergreen spreading plant. The flowers are bright yellow and cup-shaped with a darker center but they can produce different coloured flowers. If planted in wet conditions it will spread. Lythrum salicaria is a popular perennial bearing tall branching spikes of rose pink flowers. This upright hardy plant is ideal planted in damp borders or in the very shallow margins of ponds.

Plant out in spring in a water retentive soil that is free draining. Lysimachia are ideally suited to pond margins where the soil will retain moisture during dry spells. Plant in full sun although they will still thrive if planted in dappled shade. If planting the low growing varieties for ground cover, plant at 50cm apart.
