Matthiola incana is a woody-based perennial. The foliage is narrow and grey-green, and in late Spring and early Summer spikes of sweetly fragrant pink, mauve, purple or white flowers up to 2.5 cms. appear. Cultivars of this species are grown as annual or biennial bedding plants, or for cut flowers. 'Pillow Talk' produces very sweet-scented, waxy-white blossoms, that fade to pale pink, from early Summer to early Autumn over thick rosettes of silver-grey, strap-shaped leaves
