These plants form a clump as they get older and flowers that are singles, semi double and multi petalled range from white through to red. Leaves are simple, shiny and mid to dark green in colour. There is also a Japanese tree peony which grows taller. 'Early Bird' sports fern-like leaves and cupped shaped flowers to 8cm in size. Flowers are a deep red.
