Papaver somniferum is a subtype of opium poppy which grow to about 60 to 90cm tall and has thick, hairy stems and lettuce like leaves. The seed pods are well-suited for crafts and dried floral arrangements. Most annual varieties will readily self-seed. 'Seriously Scarlet' bears deep red flowers with shaggy petals, and that has a dark centre that opens up to form a white "ruff"
