French Bean 'Cherokee Trail Of Tears'
There are two main types of French bean, climbing and dwarf. Climbing, as the name suggests, require support. The dwarf variety grow up to 0.7m. They tend to get some damage where they touch the ground, however some new varieties have been bred that produce pods on long upright stalks and are held clear of the soil and foliage. Difficult to germinate outside before the end of Spring. Get an early crop by starting them off in greenhouse. 'Cherokee Trail Of Tears' is a Heritage variety of climbing French Bean that is usually grown for drying. It has purple flowers, dark red-purple pods and black beans.

Propagating by seed
From Mid Spring TO Late Spring
Sow French beans in divided trays in the greenhouse in mid Spring, in moist compost. Do not plant in open ground until after the danger of frost has passed.

Plant out container grown plants in double rows 14in apart and 8in between plants after about 3 weeks, when plants are strong and have at least two true leaves
