Climbing French Bean Purple King in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Phaseolus vulgaris 'Purple King'

Climbing French Bean 'Purple King'

There are two main types of French bean, climbing and dwarf. Climbing, as the name suggests, require support. The dwarf variety grow up to 0.7m. They tend to get some damage where they touch the ground, however some new varieties have been bred that produce pods on long upright stalks and are held clear of the soil and foliage. Difficult to germinate outside before the end of Spring. Get an early crop by starting them off in greenhouse. 'Purple King' is a climbing bean that needs support from canes or sticks. Leaves are green, flowers pink/purple in colour and the purple pods are easy to see when picking. (Also know as "magic beans" because the beans turn green when cooked, thereby giving an indication of when they are cooked, to prevent overcooking!)

Propagating by seed

From Mid Spring TO Late Spring

Sow French beans in divided trays in the greenhouse in mid Spring, in moist compost. Do not plant in open ground until after the danger of frost has passed.

Planting outdoors

From Early Summer TO Mid Summer

Plant out container grown plants in double rows 14in apart and 8in between plants after about 3 weeks, when plants are strong and have at least two true leaves
