Phoenix dactylifera

Date Palm

Date palms grow in warm areas of the world, as they need a growing temperature over over 20 deg.F (-6 C) to survive, with pollination at 95 deg. F (35 C). The fruits require dry, hot conditions with warm nights. Date palms grow large,- up to 120 feet, and need plenty of space for their adventitious roots (that not only anchor the plant, but also collect water for the plant. In order to bear fruit, a male and female tree are needed.

Flowering

From Late Winter TO Early Spring

Date palms are dioecious - a tree produces either male or female flowers. The male flowers produce pollen, and the female flowers will become dates if pollinated.

Planting in Spring

From Early Spring TO Late Spring

Plant the trees in Spring, in a sunny site in soil that is free-draining. Dig a hole twice as deep and wide as the root base to loosen the soil and place the plant so that the roots are just covered, and the plant is sitting high., then press soil round the roots. Water in well. Stake to plant, so that it grows up straight. Water the young plant regularly to establish it.

Planting in Autumn

From Early Autumn TO Mid Autumn

Plant the trees in Autumn, in a sunny site in soil that is free-draining. Dig a hole twice as deep and wide as the root base to loosen the soil and place the plant so that the roots are just covered, and the plant is sitting high., then press soil round the roots. Water in well. Stake to plant, so that it grows up straight. Water the young plant regularly to establish it.

Propagating by offsets

From Early Spring TO Late Spring

The trees produce offsets at the base of the trunk, and these can be removed and planted in a prepared bed or in a pot. It will take about 12 years for the new plant to bear fruit.
