Pea Shiraz in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Pisum Sativum 'Shiraz'

Pea 'Shiraz'

Peas are an easy crop to grow, very productive, and if planted in succession give pickings from mid to late summer. There are two main types of pea, dwarf and climbing, the later needing supports. In addition round seeded peas tend to be the hardy varieties and are the early peas; wrinkled seeded being the later type, being second early and main crop. 'Shiraz' is a mangetout variety with bi-coloured flowers and purple pods that should be harvested young and eaten raw, or steamed, or added to stir-fry. (The purple colour fades to dark green when boiled or steamed)

Planting outdoors in spring

From Mid Spring TO Mid Summer

Plant container grown peas in mid Spring in triple rows about 4" between seedlings. Don't let them dry out.

Propagation by seed

From Early Spring TO Early Summer

Early round seeded peas can be sown in early Spring; and wrinkle seeded, second early or main crop varieties are best sown in mid Spring, when the ground has warmed a little. Sow in shallow trench about 2" deep and 10" wide sprinkle seed in the bottom to end up about 4" apart.
