Plantago lanceolata
Ribwort Plantain
Plantago lanceolata forms a rosette of leathery lanceate leaves up to 30cm long (usually shorter), and a brown flowerhead with many tiny cream flowers on the top, on a long stem. High in tannin, and so makes an excellent field plaster. Children wrap the stem around the flowerhead and 'ping' it at friends. It is a widespread grassland and arable wild plant, or weed, in Britain. It is related to the shorter 'greater plantain'. It is attractive to wildlife.
