Plectranthus argentatus

Silver Spurflower

Plectranthus are warm-climate plants occurring largely in the southern hemisphere. Closely related to Solenostemon, they are commonly called spurflowers. They can be grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory or outdoors in baskets, pots or in sunny borders. The foliage is often ornamental and the flowers are small but are often borne in good-size racemes in shades of purple, pink, white, or blue. P. Argentatus has hairy, silvery stems, grey-green leaves and small tubular bluish-white flowers in short racemes in summer. In the UK, treat as an annual, or provide protection, as it is tender.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Plectranthus needs well-drained soil of moderate fertility in dappled shade. Most species are not hardy and will not survive outdoors in temporate regions however, 'Silver Shield' is hardier than most and can stand short periods down to 0C. If grown indoors, provide full light but with protection from hot sun. Water freely and fertilise monthly during active growth, but keep just moist in winter.

Propagation

From Early Spring TO Late Winter

Divide in spring, or take stem-tip cuttings any time. Rooted branches of trailing species can be removed. To grow from seed, sow ripe seed at 66° to 75°F.
