Prunus cerasifera or Cherry-plum, is a small deciduous tree or shrub native to south east Europe and western Asia. It is one of the earliest to come into blossom in the late Winter or early Spring, with white flowers which are followed by edible yellow or red cherry-like plums in late Summer, Makes a good hedging plant. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, and the fruit are attractive to birds. 'Hessei' is an unusual, dwarf, cherry-plum tree. It grows to just 2m high, and bears white flowers, occasionally tinged with pink at theedges of the petals, in Spring.The foliage is also attractive - bright green leaves that turn darker with age, slightly variegated, unusual mottled edge of pink, white and purple, and then in Autumn, turning to shades f red. . In autumn, the foliage turns yellow, red and purple.
