Purpleleaf Chokecherry in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Prunus virginiana 'Schubert'

Purpleleaf Chokecherry

Chokecherry is a suckering shrub or small tree. It is drought tolerant and has lots of pretty cream coloured flowers in Spring. Birds love it so you may never see a ripe fruit. It likes part shade where there are hot summers, but will do all right in full sun. 'Schubert' is a known for purple foliage. The leaves emerge green in the Spring, gradually maturing to dark purple by early Summer. The pyramidal form, and foliage colour, makes the tree a focal point in the garden

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Cherries prefer deep, fertile and well-drained soil with pH 6.5-6.7. They dislike shallow, sandy or badly drained soils. Acid cherries tolerate some shade and are suitable as fan-trained trees against north-facing walls or fences, or as open centred bush trees. Best planted in full sunlight.
