Western Chokecherry in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Prunus Virginiana

Western Chokecherry

Chokecherry is a suckering shrub or small tree. It is drought tolerant and has lots of pretty cream coloured flowers in Spring. Birds love it so you may never see a ripe fruit. It likes part shade where there are hot summers, but will do all right in full sun.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Cherries prefer deep, fertile and well-drained soil with pH 6.5-6.7. They dislike shallow, sandy or badly drained soils. Acid cherries tolerate some shade and are suitable as fan-trained trees against north-facing walls or fences, or as open centred bush trees. Best planted in full sunlight.
