Pulmonaria rubra 'Redstart'

Lungwort 'Redstart'

Pulmonaria are perennials, or sometimes evergreen, that form clumps above a creeping rhizome. The leaves are often prominently spotted in black and blue, or sometimes in pale green, or unspotted. The colour of the flower in bud is often pink, which then changes as the flower matures. They open to reveal clusters of funnel-shaped flowers in late winter or early spring. 'Redstart' is a clump-forming perennial to 40cm with large, velvety, plain green leaves. Sprays of coral-red flowers appear from midwinter.

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Plant young plants in humus-rich, fertile, moist but not waterlogged soil in dapled sunlight or partial shade. Provide them with a sheltered position but not in full shade. Site them in the front of borders, or use as ground cover, and in the right conditions they look great in a woodland border.

Flowering Season

From Late Winter TO Early Spring

Pulmonaria flower very early in the year, late winter and early spring and are attractive to bees providing much needed early nectar.
