The plant is poisonous. It develops upright rhizomes, which go deep (up to 1m) into the ground and this functions as food-storage organ. Its leaves and stems are long, soft, silver-grey and hairy. It grows to 15–30 cm. 'Pinwheel Dark Red Shades' has deep red flowers.
