Pulsatilla vulgaris is a clump-forming perennial with dissected slightly hairy leaves and white, pink or purple flowers with golden centres in Spring. The flowers are followed by silky seeds. The plant is poisonous. It develops upright rhizomes, which go deep (up to 1m) into the ground and this functions as food-storage organ. Its leaves and stems are long, soft, silver-grey and hairy. It grows to 15–30 cm. 'Pinwheel Dark Red Shades' has deep red flowers.
