Rhododendron vireya 'Apassionata'
Vireya Rhododendron 'Apassionata'
Rhododendron is a genus of more than 1,000 species. These plants tend to be grown for their magnificent flowers that come into full bloom in spring time. Vireyas are different from the Rhododendron commonly grown in cooler climes. Vireyas are tropical plants. In the wild they are either epiphytes, clinging to branches in the tree canopy, with just a little moss and humus to cover the roots, or growing terrestrially, often in crevices. Both provide excellent drainage, after tropical rain that is typical of their natural habitat - and this is important when growing them in cultivation. The flowers, which can appear at almost any time of the year, are trumpet-shaped. Many Vireyas are useful as long lasting cut flowers or even for use in corsages.

Flowering
From Early Spring TO Late Winter
Rhododendron vireya can bloom several times a year. It bears trumpet-shaped flowers.
Planting
From Mid Spring TO Late Spring
Plant in full sun to fairly dense shade, but in any case so that the plant is not in afternoon sun, which can damage the leaves. (Or, if in a spot where it will get afternoon sun, protect the plant from the sun) Plants grown in shadier spots tend to be less compact. If planting outdoors, plant in free-draining, slightly acidic soil Prefers free draining, slightly acidic soils.Dig a hole twice the size of the pot the plant is in, and twice as deep, Backfill the hole with a mix of your garden soil, Kings Compost and Sheep Pellets, leaving a space in which to plant the vireya, which should be placed in the hole to the same depth as it was in the pot. Water in well.
Propagation by cuttings
From Late Summer TO Mid Autumn
Semi hard wood cuttings are taken from the current years growth from late summer to mid autumn the bottom of the cuttings is hard and soft on the top. With a sharp knife take a cutting of about 14 cms, remove lowest leaves, dip end into rooting hormone, and place round the edge of a pot filled with a suitable compost, water well, they must remain moist till rooted, place under glass but in semi shade.
