Ruta Graveolens

Garden Rue

Rue, as a herb hat has been used by for centuries but is primarily grown today for ornamental purposes. Ruta graveolens is a hardy, evergreen plant that typically grows in a mound. The leaves are small, with a characteristic grayish colour. Yellow flowers blooming in clusters above the foliage in early summer. The plant is very ornamental with pretty evergreen foliage, it can be grown in part shade or full sun and it is drought tolerant. It is easy to grow from seed, easy to maintain, evergreen, and is especially good in knot gardens because it can be pruned into a hedge. Rue is also a good rock garden plant. It can grow in poor soil and stand hot, dry sites. The bruised leaves have a strong, pleasant orange-like fragrance and is one of the most pleasant herbs to inhale.  In the garden, rue attracts wildlife and butterflies, while repelling fleas and mosquitoes. Dogs and cats hate rue; make a tea from the leaves and spray the boundary to keep them off the garden. Wear gloves when harvesting and don't touch leaves on hot sunny days; its essential oils can cause photodermatitis. The sap contains furanocoumarins, sensitizing the skin to light and causing blistering or dermatitis in some people. NOTE foliage can cause skin irritation, and is dangerous to ingest.

Flowering Season

From Early Summer TO Late Spring

Flowering season.

Plant container plants

From Early Spring TO Mid Summer

Plant container plants in a fully sunny or partially shaded position.

Propagation by Seed

From Mid Spring TO Mid Spring

Fill a seed tray with seed compost, water and allow to drain. Sprinkle seeds over the surface allowing roughly 25mm space between seeds and cover with a thin layer of compost. Put tray in a clear polythene bag and place on a windowsill. When seedlings show remove plastic bag. When the second pair of leaves appear on the seedlings thin out to 50mm spacing by removing the weakest looking plants. After 2 or 3 weeks and when danger of frost has passed plants can then be planted outside into required position.
