Sambucus canadensis, the American black elderberry, is a medium to large shrub that will grow in many different types of conditions, bears flat umbels of small creamy-white flowers in late Spring / early Summer, followed by clusters of small black edible berries. 'Aurea' has golden foliage, and clusters of showy yellowish white flowers, followed by small bright red fruit.
