Schinus molle
Peppercorn Tree
Schinus molle is a fast-growing evergreen tree in warm climates, slower-growing in cooler climes. (It can be grown in a sheltered spot in milder parts of Britain). The leaves are green and pinnate and the fragrant whiteish flowers, which appear in Spring to early Summer, and which hang in clusters, are either male or female - only one sex on any one tree, so two trees of different sex are required for seed. If fruit is produced, it is 1/3 " wide red berries, in Autumn into Winter. This tree can be invasive, given favourable conditions.

Flowers
From Early Spring TO Late Spring
Trees will bear either female or male flowers in early Spring to late Spring. The flowers are whiteish in colour and fragrant. THe trees are not self-fertile, and a tree of each sex will be required in order for seed to be produced
Planting
From Mid Spring TO Late Spring
Plant in free-draining, preferably sandy soil, in a sunny position. The tree can tolerate drought, but cannot tolerate shade - it needs full sun
Propagating by seed
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
Sow seed in a warm greenhouse in mid Spring and prick out the seedlings into individual pots once they are large enough to handle. Grow the seedlings on in the greenhouse for their first Winter, and plant out the following early Summer.
