Triadica sebifera syn. Sapium sebiferum

Tallow Tree

Triadica sebifera - Tallow Tree - is a deciduous, fast-growing, small tree that is native to eastern Asia where the waxy coating of the seeds is used for candle and soap making, and the heart-shaped leaves as herbal medicine to treat boils. The plant sap and leaves are said to be toxic, and decaying leaves from the plant are toxic to other species of plant. clusters of greenish-yellow and white flowers appear in terminal spike-like inflorescences up to 20 cm long in Spring, and are followed by 3-lobed, 3-capsuled green fruits that mature to brown-black. The capsule walls fall away and release three globose seeds with a white, tallow-containing covering. The tree has attractive Autumn colours when the leaves turn red. It is considered a noxious weed in some areas of the world. WARNING : All or parts of this plant are poisonous.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

Plant in any type of well-drained soil in a sunny site. It is not a reliably hardy tree, but has been often survives in the areas of Britain that have mild Winters. Beware: All or parts of this plant are poisonous

Flowering

From Late Winter TO Mid Spring

Tallow Tree bears clusters of greenish-yellow and white flowers from late Winter into Spring. The seeds ripen in mid to late Autumn

Propagating by cuttings

From Late Summer TO Early Autumn

Take semi- ripe cuttings from this season's growth in Autumn. Cut neatly, just below a leaf node, a 5" approx. piece of a healthy shoot that has soft growth at the tip. pinch out the growing tip, and cut off the bottom leaves. Dip the bottom of the cutting in hormone rooting powder, and carefully place in a pot of cutting compost with the leaves just above the level of the compost. Water, label, cover with a polythene bag, and place in a warm, bright place, out of direct sunlight. Take the polythene bag off periodically for a while for ventilation (at least twice a week)
