Original:The San Pedro is a columna cactus which grows quite fast, has a strong root system and branches off from the base of the stem. It is used as a grafting stem for other, difficult to grow, cacti. The tallest recorded specimen was over 12 metres tall. White flowers which open at night, are produced at the end of the stems. New:Trichocereus varieties are often sold as Echinopsis. This is a large group of cactus hybrids, well known for their large, spectacular flowers. They usually bloom from early summer and the flowering can continue for up to three months. They grow well in large pots or in the ground on hot arid regions. They can survive hot sun but are prone to scorching thus they are better suited to light shade.

Planting outdoors
From Early Spring TO Late Spring
Trichocereus will only survive outside in warmer climates, because of winter rains and low temperatures. It must have sun most of the day. Morning and afternoon sun is better than midday sun. The planting area should have very good drainage. Most cactus are not killed by the cold, but when the water inside the plant freezes it expands and splits the outer layer of skin, allowing bacteria to enter the plant.
Propagation

Columnar types of cactus such Trichocereus are propagated by stem cutting. Take a stem cutting and allow it to 'scab' over and produce a callus. You can lay it on some potting soil or mix and wait for roots to appear before replanting in fresh compost.
Planting in pots

Potting mixes can be made by mixing one part potting mix, one part washed sand & one part course grit or gravel. When planting the cactus do.t bury it in a deep hole in the potting mix. The plant should set on top of the potting mix, this allows the roots to grow down to get moisture rather than the plant setting in wet soil. A potted cactus will live and flower in the house if given enough light so place it near a window, where it will receive light most of the day.
