Trichodiadema bulbosum
African Bonsai
Trichodiadema bulbosum has emerald green leaves with tufty bristles at the tips. It branches heavily to produce a small shrub with roots that thicken to form tubers. These tubers can be raised above the soil line to create a gnarly "caudiciform" effect, thereby making this plant an excellent subject for bonsai. In spring and summner they produce small purple flowers.

Planting
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
They like bright light and airflow. Cutback watering in winter. Trichodiadema tolerate some frost, but really do best if they are protected from frost. The type of growing medium is very important for growing bonsai. It must be water-retentive, free-draining and non-compacting to give good aeration. There are several types that can be bought from bonsai specialists or online. The most important components for a Bonsai growing medium are Akadama, Pumice, Lava rock, organic potting compost and fine gravel (grit).
