Tricyrtis macropoda
Toad Lily
Tricyrtis macropoda, which is commonly known as toad lily, is a perennial plant native to the forests and grassy slopes of some regions in China. It can normally grow to 24-30" tall, and prefers growing in shady areas with rich moist soil. Its leaves are shiny, wuth an ovate-elliptic to oblong-lanceolate shape, and dark green in hue. Each leaf can reach 4-6" long, and are sessile or have short petioles. Toad lily leaves usually remain in an attractive form throughout the entirety of the growing season. Its flowers are generally small, and resemble those of orchids in form, with lily-like shapes. The flowers can be white to pale lavender in coloration, with a heavy purple speckling. Every toad lily flower features six tepals (almost identical appearing sepals and petals). Toad lily is easily grown in rich, medium to wet, and well drained soils in part shade to full shade. It prefers moist, organically rich, and partly acidic soils in a partly shaded area. The soil should not be allowed to dry out. Toad lily is a rhizomatous plant that is capable of colonizing in a garden area over time in a non-invasive fashion.
