Broad Bean Red Epicure in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Vicia Faba 'Red Epicure'

Broad Bean 'Red Epicure'

Broad beans are leguminous plants grown for the pods of large, kidney-shaped beans. Seeds can be sown in Autumn for an earlier crop, or in Spring. Most varieties grow quite tall, (around 1.2 mtrs.) and need support. Dwarf varieties grow to around 60 cms. 'Red Epicure' is a variety that produces unusual mahogany red -coloured beans with an excellent flavour. (The bean stays red if steamed gently, rather than boiled)

Propagating by seed

From Mid Autumn TO Early Spring

Broad beans can be sown in mid to late Autumn for an crop in early Summer, or in Spring for an Autumn crop. Sow seeds in soil that has been fertilised or manured previously, and sow in double rows, but stagger planting to optimise the use of space. Sow seeds 2" deep and 9" apart.

Planting

From Late Autumn TO Early Spring

Broad beans can be started off in pots, and then planted out into the growing bed when they are big enough to handle.
