Jujube in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Ziziphus jujuba syn. Ziziphus mauritiana

Jujube

'Jujuba' is a tropical, evergreen fruiting tree that can grow up to 15 m high with. The tree is thorny, and the fruit, usually oval, are 1-2.5" (2.5 - 6.25cms) long, with crisp, white flesh, and smooth shiny, thin skin. The mature fruit are red to purplish black in colour, and wrinkled, looking like small dates. .A British grower says "This shouldn't really be surviving here. It is not the toughest normally. It should have delicious cherry sized ovate fruits with medicinal qualities, but it has only flowered once in our climate. It should be a medium size tree but mine has lived in a pot all of its life restricting its size. This is about all I know apart from its sharp thorns. Love its decorative appearance."
