I have a tiny farmhouse in rural PA w/ lots of fields & forest... I enjoy being surrounded by as many plants as possible, both outdoors & in my home!

Sonchus asper

Help me identify this plant... I know it's a #weed, but don't know the name...

@aes239 #plantid- If it is dandelion and you don't want it everywhere, try not to let it form a ball of fun "blow-away" seed after flowering. LOL

Hi Amanda, I think it is Prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper). It is related to dandelion though. Very bee and hoverfly friendly!

@SikoMa You're right! this plant is much taller than the dandelion or the coltsfoot- nearly 2 feet!

@awomanonabike Yep, pretty sure that's it! Thank you 😊

I have some that are almost as tall as me. Have no clue what they are, but the flower does look like a dandelion. However, the foliage does not. Wish I could help more😔😕🤔

@usgardentags @teamgardentags I added this plant to the encyclopedia, but the Latin name should be "asper" (my autocorrect changed it to aster instead) Is there a way for me to edit this or should I rewrite the entry?

@SikoMa I found out they can grow to be 7 feet tall!

@jruthie The flower looks identical to a dandelion, but this plant is much taller & has multiple heads 🤔
