2016 is the first year I have been able to do any gardening. I live in southwestern Ohio, USA. I love roses, orchids, toad lilies...everything 😁

Hope I put this under the right orchid. I have been fighting spider mites with my orchids all year. Can seem to get rid of them. Not sure where they can from. Just throughout several orchid due to the mites. However this one I am trying something more drastic. It was covered in spider mites. It is my favorite mostly because it is my first orchid. It is about 5 years old.

Trying to save it. So I put it out side in the cold winter air for about an hour. Brought it back in. Washed it off in cold water. Washed it with soap next. Rinsed off the soap. Then wiped each leaf and stem with paper towels. Looks ok right now. I cut off one leaf. It was really bad with mites. It was turning brown and could not be saved.

@gjones I think they came in last year from a clearance orchids I had gotten. Never had them before that time. And now I just can’t get rid of them.

Good luck I think we all can relate especially when it’s one of our favorites but it looks very healthy and isn’t a baby so hopefully with such good care it’ll make it. I just found 100’s of aphids little blk. ones and white ones on my Hybiscus in the greenhouse but that’s a greenhouse problem I guess I need more circulation any tips on getting rid of the aphids ASAP???👍🏻🎄⛄️

Just opened today. Had this orchid since 2015. First one I bought. And only one to survive the spider mites war. Still finding some spider mites on it from time to time. but me and the orchid are winning the war.

This is the first orchid I every purchased. I bought it in 2014. It had a baby on it for over a year. And it hasn't bloom at all since the flowers it had when I bought it. I don't even remember what color the flowers were. But think I will find out soon 😁. For the first time there is a flower stem growing. So excited!!!

Did you ever see leaves growing. I head you don't cut the flower stem below the 4th node. Of course that is after I cut mine. 😳

@ktemory. It grow a new leaf last year. I think it was putting all its energy into the baby. I never cut the flower stems until they are dried out. The plant uses the liquid in the stems. I'm very excited about all my moth orchids. All of them are growing new leaves right now. One is forming the buds.

Mine only formed babies when they were near dead. 😞 but the stem is good sign. They need fertilizer to really get blooming, I believe.

Orchids love cramped quarters so do not re-pot thinking they are root bound. They require little water and once the blooms fade they will become dormant for 6 weeks to 2-3 months. As long as the leaves are still there the orchid blooms will reappear. I have mine in an easterly facing window. It received morning sun and seems very happy! I also live in the South West 🌵 desert, as in Tucson,AZ.
