106 year old Edwardian cottage garden with a 106 year old house attached which is equally challenging. Some days I feel like I'm the same age.

#Aucuba Japonica #Spotted Laurel I'm so excited 'I could crush a grape'. One solitary red berry. Checked the whole 6/7ft high shrub not another berry in sight but this is progress. The thing is where's the fertilising father. These shrubs as sold by garden centres etc are overwhelmingly female & male plants are rare so 'whose the daddy'? after all these years.

Well done @Hanski You've got berries in the plural but sadly my one only has a solitary berry but as I said this is progress. Maybe double production for next year. I would love to try and grow a plant from the seed but reluctant to remove it. I think it might be a race between the birds and me.

@kimmy01 I'm thinking that you seem to have a lot of berries on that neglected Spotted Laurel you got from your neighbour & I've only 1 on my pampered specimen. Maybe I should treat it a bit more mean!! It's fair to say that plants that are under stress are more inclined to flower & fruit as they are desperate for survival.
