25 Feb 2019 • Is it just me or does everyone feel a bit sad when they prune the late flowering clematis in February? 😢😉

I've just done all mine, but it makes me hopeful rather than sad 😄😄

It does me too Jane...once I’ve done it. But it does go against the grain to chop off so much lovely new growth @pelly

Hi @awomanonabike can I ask why you prune it this time of year? Mine has got some new shoots and I’m not sure what to do :)

I feel like that with roses.

I didn't do mine properly last year and regretted it as they didn't do well. So this year I've been meticulous in following the correct procedure and now have my fingers firmly crossed Jacqueline 😄😄

Hi Rachael. Of course you can ask. It all depends what clematis you have. Basically there are three types. The first type flower in the spring and don’t need pruning or just need a bit of a tidy up after flowering. Type 2 tend to have very big flowers in summer and you don’t usually prune them at all other than trimming any dead bits. Then type 3 (which this is) you cut down to the lowest pair of buds in February. This is because they flower on current year’s growth... @rachael27

...so if you don’t prune them all of the flowers will be at the very top. Do you know the name of the one(s) you’ve got? @rachael27

I know what you mean Urszula though somehow that doesn’t affect me as badly 🤷♀️ @ublaszko

I’m sure you can uncross them Jane. They’re usually happy if you get it right but shows how important it is to identify them properly 👍 @pelly

@awomanonabike I’m not sure what type I have, it produced big flowers through early last summer then a few little ones again towards the end of summer. I cut it all back not long ago because a lot of it looked dead with new growth last summer and looked messy. But now new shoots are coming out so I may just leave them and see what happens, thanks for your help :)

That sounds like one in pruning group 2. You often get a second small late flush of flowers with them. All you need to do is carefully cut back any dead bits then leave it to strut its stuff 👍😍 @rachael27

So abundantly beautiful Jacqueline 💜💜💜

It has been amazing this year. I've no idea what it is that it has liked so much but hope it does the same every year! @Jasonsparkes1 @pelly

The photo does not do justice to the colour of this clematis, not pick up the velvet texture. So easy to grow too (as long as I don't cut it back so far down that the slugs can get to the new growth in the spring!)

Love this one! 💜

It's great isn't it? I'm hoping it will soon meet up with the golden hop I have nearby which gets further every year
Loving this #colourcombo ❤️💜 #rosa-dublinbay #clematis-etoile-violette
Very pretty 💜♥️
Great combination
Thank you Diane 😊 @hkyfvr
Thanks Jason. UnfortunatelyI can’t remember the name of the clematis at the back but I love them all together 😊 @hebelover
Always welcome 😍
