When I'm not on my bike, you'll find me in my organic-ish garden in #Cumbria. Favourite plants? Wisteria, hellebores, peonies, philadelphus...

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans'

19 Aug 2019 • Here you are Laura. It is producing some small shoots where I removed the larger ones but I think it will be a while before they take over and will be easy enough to remove 😊 @columbiariver

Yes, I took out lots of thin, straggly bits from the centre as well as a few big branches. I also took several out near the bottom to lift it a bit. I also took some branches that were growing vertically and spoiling the overall look. I’m left with two verticals at slight angles to each other and a more open framework. Have fun 😃@columbiariver

17 Apr 2019 • After! In January I asked for suggestions as to what to do with this #cryptomeria as it is too big. So, I haven’t coppiced it, at least not yet. Nor have I cloud pruned it, as that just seemed too artificial and not right for my garden (and too difficult!). Instead I have cut some stems down to the base, cut some lower branches back to the trunk and cleared the centre by removing all the little dead stems. I’m not yet sure if I’ve finished, but it was getting dark 💤

I like how it looks after the haircut 😊👍 It looks more open and light, especially with the lower growth thinned out. Almost like a raised canopy but more natural. Love it! 😍😍

Thank you Urszula! The original plan was to completely remove the left-hand trunk but I rather like it now. I’ll just have to wait and see if it lets in enough light to the bed behind it 🤔😎 @ublaszko

Thank Val. It’s taken me almost 4 months to pluck up the courage to do something to it! @valjones-hughes

Thank you Jason. It may sound daft but it feels much nicer too. Cryptomeria are really soft but the dead needles aren’t! @Jasonsparkes1

Lovely and light and airy! I’d be tempted to remove the lower branches still...it’s always difficult to know when to stop! 🙈 should let a lot more light through now! 👍🏼👏🏼

🤔🤔🤔 If anything I might remove some of the thinner ones higher up though you may be right. I’ve already taken quite a bit out from low down but maybe need to take more 🤔🤔🤔 @rachelbrooks

4 Jan 19 • So, what to do... This is too big and is shading the ‘sunny’ bank. I was going to chop it down but then read that it is unusual in that it can be coppiced. Should I? 🤔🤔🤔

Yes coppice it, would be a shame to get rid of it 👍🏼😀👍🏼

I haven't, but I did look online, although still couldn't find a pic 🤔, I like that you can shape it how you like and it sounds like you just can't kill it 👍🏼
