Ooh do I spy flower buds or new leaves on my #camellia ? I’m not sure which but I have a horrible feeling they’re leaves and I’ll be waiting another year for flowers! 24/11/19 @ublaszko What do you reckon?
Oh no, sorry to be a party pooper but they're leaf buds 😕 Flowerbuds look a bit more round and are covered in tiny hair. I noticed today only my pink camellia has flowerbuds. I was hoping my red camellia would flower next spring but no such luck.
You've confirmed what I was thinking. 😔😕😏 suppose I'll just have to keep waiting!! @ublaszko
I was hoping I'd have more flowerbuds but only 2 on a pink one. I've had red camellia for 2 years and I thought it would have a flowerbud next spring but just leaf buds. We'll both have to be very patient 😥

@ublaszko @kimmy01 Here’s my #camellia Do we think it has a deficiency of some sort or shall I just leave it to its own devices? 14/04/19
Looks better then mine 😍 has bugs been at the leaves or did it grow like that?
It looks slightly lighter green than it's supposed to but I'd leave it be for now. It looks healthy and if it's going to produce new foliage soon I wouldn't worry too much. You could feed it in a month or two but for now better leaves it as is. 😊
@kimmy01 Think it’s been nibbled at but by what, I’m not sure!!
@ublaszko Then leave it, I shall!! 😊
It probably happened when your camellia was still in bud. Sometimes some munchers hide in the leaf buds. I have a few leaves like that but I wouldn't worry about it.

I’m assuming these are leaf buds on my #camellia rather than flowers? 07/02/19
I'm thinking flower buds 🤔
Leaf buds unfortunately. The flowerbuds would have been big and plump by now. Have you had your camellia long? Mine didn't flower in the first and second year after I bought it.
Just looked back at the pictures. You got it same time as my 2nd camellia and they're both too young to flower. They will flower next spring, just make sure it doesn't dry out in the summer, especially August and September 😊
I thought as much @ublaszko They didn’t look like other people’s flowerbuds! More wishful thinking! Just want something to happen somewhere in the garden!! Wake Up!!! 😂 @sieveheadsarah
Haha! I'm the same. February is the longest month of the year, isn't it? I keep looking out of my bedroom window wishing something to grow and flower 😁😂
Oops, fingers crossed for next year Alison 👍🏼 Spring is a few days nearer than you think Urszula @ublaszko Feb is one of the shortest months of the year 😀👍🏼😀
It feels the longest though 😁😁 @sieveheadsarah I keep wishing to nudge my crocuses along with the power of my stare.
You just made me laugh out loud Urszula, I do the same 😂😂 @ublaszko
You're welcome 😁 @sieveheadsarah

Progress photo. 😊 It only had 4 leaves on when I bought it back in April. 14/09/18 #foliagefriday
Looks like a winner...👍🏼
I hope so Elaine 😊 @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
Looks the same as my camellia which I also bought this spring 😊😊
👍🏼 there's lots of leaf buds on it too 😊 @ublaszko
Oh yeah, I can see! I think she's well on her way to flowering the following spring 👍 My red one should flower the following year as well. 😄😄 I need to pot both of mine up though as I didn't expect them to double in size within a year.
Just realised you staked yours. Mine are sort of growing every which way 😂😂 I didn't even think of staking it.
I read it somewhere that they might some supporting. Can't remember if it was on here or the info that came with the plant! 🤷♀️😂 @ublaszko and my garden gets quite windy as we're on a hill and the wind whips around the house.
I might support the newer one as the last year's one has sturdy stems already. 😊
It certainly looks very healthy Alison 💚💚
Thank you Jane 😊 @pelly
Looks lovely and shiney Alison🤗 I think a few of us have them new and are hopeful of some gorgeous blooms next year🌼🌼🌼

@ublaszko a side shoot, new growth and I think there's a side shoot even lower down. 👍🏼 16/07/18 #camellia
That's a nice big side shoot! 👍 This is so weird how excited I am that it worked. 😅 The new growth is a nice contrast to the rest of the plant. 😊
Yeah they seem to become greener after a while! It is great when you have a success. 😊 @ublaszko
Going out to check on mine now 😂😂
@ublaszko 😂😂😂
Still the same 😉😂😂

@ublaszko ooh it looks like I might have some #newgrowth after all!! 😯😊
Woohoo! 🎉🎉🎉 Congrats! 😄 Hopefully, now that I've figured out what's wrong with my camellias they will get some healthy new growth. 👍
Hope you've 'mended' yours! 🤞🏼😊 @ublaszko
I found two products that should help so hopefully at least one will work 😊
I just bought something called sequestered iron which has higher percentage of iron than ericaceous feed. I'm going to try it on one of the camellias and continue using ericaceous liquid feed on the other one. Will be interesting to see the difference between them.

#newgrowth on camellia. How do I make it bushier? Will it need pinching out or will it sort itself out? 20/05/18 #advice #advice-camellia
They sometimes get bushy by themselves, but pinching it out now will produce side shoots, now that it's growth spurt is underway.
Ok @jeatacake I'll pinch it out once or twice then. Thanks Jeff. 👍🏼
I'm wondering the same thing whether or not to pinch out my new camellias. I've read that it's recommended to pinch them out when it's young to keep it compact, rather than having to hard prune it when it's already mature. But I'm still unsure which ones to pinch out to keep nice shape 😁😅
Well I’ve gone for it. I just pinched out the full grown top leaf and the top leaf of the side shoot. Will see how it likes that before I do anything else! @jeatacake @ublaszko
I pinched out the tips of my rhodo yesterday and I'm still recovering from the shock 😅😂😂
@ublaszko I know it’s seems such a bad thing to do!!
It seems very drastic & takes some bravery 👍Did you remove the growing tip too, down to just above the next leaf joint below?
No. I wasn’t sure if I should do that as well. I will do that now! 😬
@jeatacake That's what I did with my tiny rhododendron 😊 I remember on Gardener's World they said if you pinch out the growing tip it send the growth hormone down to lateral shoots. Otherwise, the growing tip suppresses the side shoots.
Growing tips have gone 😬 @jeatacake @ublaszko
Absolutely right @ublaszko 👍

#camellia planted in ericaceous compost for now till I decide where to put it. @sadieberg @LyndaClack also checked my dahlia tubers and all mushy so that's a shame. A lesson learned! 30/04/18
I dig up my Dahlia every year. As we have clay soil they wouldn't overwinter. Your camellia aren't quite as fussy as you may have been lead to believe. Ours is in a shady spot in our soil, not ericaceous (only if in a pot) and has been stunning this year 😊
Thanks @hayleyaj it's my first time with some plants. Like to try things out and see how they do and which I like. 😊
Always the best way! 😁

Ok so bought this after seeing other people's lovely photos of #camellias and b&m bargains! Not lost much if it doesn't take. Only issue I have is I'm not sure I have enough room to plant it! Or what are the best conditions for it! #advice 🤦🏼♀️😂
Likes acid soil with some shade and protection from frost and wind which can make the flower buds drop off. It looks a lovely one, well worth your pocket money.
@sadieberg Thanks. My garden can get quite windy and breezy! Will have to work out where is the least affected area! 🙄
Do you know if your soil is acid? If not you can grow it in a pot of ericaceous compost and then you can move it around until you find the best spot for it.
@sadieberg I don't know but I know it's quite clayish. Good idea about the pot. I might well do that!
Great @LyndaClack Will definitely do that. Think best place I can put it will get evening sun and hopefully not to windy! Will be off to G C tomorrow then!! 👍🏼😊
Meant to post this for #foliagefriday new leaves on my #camellia #pink really hope it flowers next year
