Tropaeolum majus

Problem. Caterpillars got into my Nasturtium flower basket and they’re eating everything. Not sure what kind of caterpillars they are. How do we know which ones turn into butterflies?!🦋 What do I do?!

I've never harvested #nasturtium #seeds before and I have some of these on my plant. Can I pick them now when they're green like this? They don't need to be dried out?

@sushiwaitress I usually collect them around this time, when the seeds start falling to the ground. I only collect a part of the seeds and the others simply fall to the ground and next year self-seed without me doing anything at all (the beauty of Nasturtiums). The seeds that I collected, I let them dry out on their own and keep them in a paper bag in the garage (or shed if you have). I plant them out in March next year.

@crabby58 These ones are in full sun but I have others in shady areas that are doing very well. They do self seed and come back year after year.

8.6.2020 I planted the seeds outside very late (May) but have been diligent in watering them during the dry spells and now here they are, growing with confidence. I’ll need to keep an eye on aphids but birds are really helping out with that. I also sprinkled some other seeds among the nasturtiums, now I can’t remember what, waiting to be surprised 🤭😅

@monaboghiu They are! As long as it’s not too hot and dry during the summer, they seem to dislike that!

@carmen-sylva Roxana I've had the Scarlet Red last year. They did ok until the middle of summer when their leaves were covered with insects. Let's see what happens this year. Fingers crossed

@monaboghiu That’s interesting! I also found that the red varieties of Nasturtium were more likely to be devoured by aphids. The orange ones remain the most robust and stubborn..

@carmen-sylva that's good news. The ones I bought for this year are orange and yellow :) I didn't know that the red variety was more sensible.

@rachelbrooks I like orange and yellow too - just that this year I may have a bit too much orange in the garden even for my tastes, def less next year 😃
