I'm waiting for my camelia buds to open, they've started opening a little. My buds have slight brown patches on the outside similar to what I see on yours. I take it these patches cant be seen once its fully opened? I least I hope not😟

I started reading up on Camellias as mine wasn’t flowering. The brown patches and pale green leaves are due to using tap water and the incorrect level of soil acidity apparently. I’m going to re pot mine after it’s finished flowering. I’ll use ericaceous compost. Hope you get some flowers soon 🤞🏼 @dickturpin

The brown patches on mine appeared after the heavy rain which we've been getting here. Possibly mine got too much water as I never watered them due to them getting rainwater. I havent had the plant long. But that is a great tip on the tap water ill certainly not be using tap water now so thanks for that. Ive read the white variety suffer more with this browning known as petal blight. This was for planting in my garden but if its gonna suffer when saturated I'll keep it in a movable pot I think.

@dickturpin I’ve also bought some Camellia feed, which I’m going to start using this week. Hopefully the leaves will pick up? By the way, you’re right, you can’t see the brown patches once the blooms are fully open 👌🏼

Its nice to know the patches arent visible!😁 Im trying to play it safe and have since brought it inside till this bad weather passes Haha. Which seems to have stopped the browning spreading bigger on the buds to be honest. The picture on the tag of this camellia looks stunning I'd hate to see these blooms marred with brown patches all over them. I may buy a red variety for planting in the ground, the more the merrier!😁

The brown patches on flowerbuds are likely due to wind damage as camellias like to be in a sheltered spot 😊 Or it's frost damage if the plant receives morning sun. The leaves are showing signs of iron deficiency (yellowing between leaf veins, darker veins, first affecting new growth). Is it growing in ericaceous compost? @daisy65 @dickturpin

@dickturpin @ublaszko Thanks Urszula! Lots of helpful information. I did originally plant it in ericaceous compost but I think it needs a little ‘tlc ‘ now! It isn’t in a sheltered position either 😫 so may have to move it! I’ll keep you updated!! Thank is again ☺️

Yes thank you @ublaszko mine may of been hammered by the wind as it was quite windy recently too. There doesnt seem to be much damage done to mine to be fair but will definitely take onboard these tips thanks again.

You're welcome 😊 It's worth moving them to a better wind protection. I have two camellias and one gets more wind and has developed brown spots on leaves since the windstorms begun. It's in a pot so I'll be looking for a better spot for it too. 👍 I read recently that ericaceous compost on its own is not enough to sustain camellias all year round as they're hungry plants and need rich soil whereas pots loose fertility through watering. It's too early to fertilise now, wait for new foliage.

Also, if your camellia is iron deficient feeding it in itself won't be of much use until you fix soil pH because plants can't take up nutrients if the pH is too high/too low. You can use Epsom salts or chelated iron tonic (Epsom salts are safer as sometimes iron tonic is too strong and can burn the roots). Better to avoid tap water (as it has calcium and increases pH). If you only have tap water let it sit in a watering can overnight before using it for your acid-loving plants. 😊👍 @dickturpin

Thank you @ublaszko the leaves on mine are looking great right now, a very deep shiny dark green. The buds are starting to explode into life now too. Its fascinating how many buds are on this small plant I gotta get another one in red! I will pick up some Epsom salts too. I already bought some miracle grow liquid feed for camellia's & azalea's so will wait for the new growth before using it. Thanks for the info though, much appreciated!😁🥀
