I don't know how to grow them and I haven't been able to get the proper soul! I have one with water and rocks( it seems to be growing thin white roots?) and the other is still in original little pot. Both have lost all their blooms.@demeterstouch

Ahh I don't know much about orchids but I don't think the roots should be thin nor white. @Christos and @cyndi helped me alot to get mine back to health. When I bought it the plant didn't have any blooms. @kimguy

Spagmoss, cork, clay pellets, and orchid bark. It was a premium mix I got from that same chick who gave me those orchid pots. @kimguy

Based on the leaf coloring- this is a Doritaenopsis orchid hybrid. It is grouped within the Phalaenopsis, but unlike most moth orchids- it will have purple leaves and root tips.

There is alot of sphagnum @Christos but it has cork, perlite, clay pellets, and orchid bark as well. Do you think this is okay for it or should I get something better? #orchid #plantid-orchid #orchid-advice #orchids #orchids #indoor #indoorgarden #growroom #growlight

@demeterstouch Personally I use bark with a little amount of sphagnum moss. The clay pellets absorb all the humidity from the medium when dry so be aware of that. Give the plant a good soak and let drain thoroughly.

7w
comment
demeterstouch

Oh it has plenty of perlite, clay pellets and bark mixed it. Just the very top layer is only sphagnum. Ohh ok I'll water it more. I'm only watering it when the sphagnum is dry. So I'll start doing it sooner. I'll see if I can get better photos of the media. @Christos

@demeterstouch I never recommend that mix of medium. My approach and especially with Phalaenopsis is "keep it simple".

I prefer vanda baskets for hanging! They help with those they like to water more because they will allow your media to try out more frequently. I also think they look really nice. Lol

jlsardina

Also- if you cut back your flower spike to its base, and fertilize, your plant will be able to focus on building back the roots that you had to take off because of the rot. Granted, you won’t have a bloom until next year, but your plant will be healthier and happier! I cut my stems back all the way after each bloom. I believe this way the plant has a way to work on the whole system for the majority of the year and only focus on flowering when it is time.

@jlsardina I think I may end up cutting the stalks back for the very same reason you stated hahah, great minds huh? Definitely gunna check out that hanging basket you guys were talking about!! Thank you♥️♥️

@demeterstouch In this case the mix is perfect. Just put a little bit of gravel in the bottom of the pot. Let say 5 or 6 pieces. With that every time you water the orchid the pot wan't float.

@demeterstouch start first with the orchid. Soak it for 20 minutes with room temperature water. Also soak your medium in a separate container with room temperature water. With that you reduce the shock to the orchid and you give her time to adopt in her new home. Keep us updated.

Orchid # 3, tried my best to cut away the rot without cutting the remaining roots. I did this to allow some sort of structure to secure the plant once repotted. I pulled out of the peat and sphagnum moss. Mixed in cinnamon with the remaining media then cleaned old container to temporarily hold these until I can get new materials. #orchid #plantid-orchid #orchid-advice #orchids #orchidhelp #indoor #indoorgarden #growroom #growlight #plantadvice

Orchid # 3 had the absolute worse damage with black rotted roots. They had quite a bit of mold that was starting to develope. Decided to cut away major rot to the already few roots. I have hope but we'll see. Along with the others, I went ahead and pulled out of the peat and sphagnum moss. Mixed in cinnamon with the remaining media then cleaned old container to temporarily hold these until I can get new materials. #orchid #plantid-orchid #orchid-advice #orchids #orchidhelp #indoor #indoorgarden

@demeterstouch what is that powder in the second photo? Do not cut the stems. My rule is " anything green stays in the plant". Welcome to the magic world of orchids. 😀😀😀

@Christos what I did was cut all the crumbly dead roots just shortly before the healthy part (allowing some dread roots to remain) and then coated with ground cinnamon to prevent any further rot. There were some parts that have been rotted and were black with mold/fungus. So I did cut those portions too then packed with ground cinnamon. The only reason I did this was to prevent any further spreading of rot/mold/fungus! Oh boy what have I signed myself up for 😂😂😂

@demeterstouch the Purple coloration in the leaves is natural. It is a natural process. When a plant ( in that case your Phalaenopsis) are in a very high light produce this purple colour for protection. Something like a natural sunscreen.

Oh ok, should I bring it into a shader area? (I don't know how the seller had his light situation set up for these but I currently have them in a bright shady spot between my two 2700 lumen CFL grow bulbs). @Christos

@demeterstouch if you think it is alright keep it as it is. If you see more purple coloration then you must remove it somewhere else or with low intensity with the grow bulbs.
