This is scary stuff! Hope I haven’t killed it. When the time comes, I wonder if I can stick the longer stems about halfway into the compost?

Thanks @cyndi. I wasn’t sure if I should bury the stem a lot or just a little bit. Perhaps I should do some deep and some more shallow.

YES! This #aeonium should be just fine with chop and then the planned replant!! Let the broken tops garden off good, so they do not rot, and enjoy all the new plants. I had two mother plant rot in the middle (not tops or roots) and I did just this. All are growing fine. You an break off the stem lengths and have more plants too! @cyndi @saguaro #aeonium-advice

I think your best bet will be to behead each stem, let them callous over and repot them. You could leave the floppy stems in their current pot and see if you get any new heads from the stems. How much water and light has this aeonium been getting? Those are generally the main causes of problems with succulents. It's also worth checking for pests.

It has been a wet summer - could that be it @Soph1e ? I have moved it indoors now. With light levels rapidly decreasing, would it be better to postpone the “surgery” until spring?

I've never seen an aeonium do this before @emve. Is it in free draining compost? As long as it isn't wet for prolonged periods, I would have thought it would be OK. You could operate now. Give it a week to scar over the cut ends and then pop it in dry, gritty compost. Wait to water it for a couple of weeks to encourage new roots to form. Aeoniums are generally summer dormant so it should be happy to keep growing over winter.

It scares me, though. @angiecrazycatlady @soph1e @gjones l haven’t found the courage to start the surgery yet - perhaps tomorrow. And I need to find more perlite. The shops here are all sold out due to all the seed sowing during these past covid months.

@gjones, I just realized my grow light will be free this winter, since my lemon trees now live in the greenhouse. Perhaps a beheaded aeonium is the worthy cause I’ve been searching for when it comes to who will be needing that grow light the most.

What is going on here? Is it supposed to be this curly? It started the outdoor season with all five arms standing straight up.
