Oh no. What a shame. They're sawfly. Next year start checking on the underside of the leaves for the little eggs and remove them. Probably from May time. I've not had any this year because I think the ants have been protecting them. they're below a tree that has lots of greenfly and are full of sticky secretions which the ants like. I've seen ants attack ladybirds for the same reason.
I had the same problem with mine, had to chop the whole lot down.
Fortunately they didn't ruin them when they were in full flower!!
