We seem to be suffering from Chelsea withdrawal symptoms. No better way to herald the weekend, then, with one of the most popular plants from our 2017 exhibit.
This is Calycanthus Hartlage Wine. It is a beautiful, lighted scented, medium-sized shrub with glossy green leaves and wine-coloured flowers with a cream centre. It produces flowers in early summer lasting for many weeks into late summer, when the leaves turn butter-yellow in autumn before falling.
I love this shrub. Fell in love with it a few years back at Chelsea on Hilliers stand. But sadly I have terrible fungal problems with mine. I tried roseclear this year but to no avail. So watch out for black spot type marks on it #taggers
@patiorose it might be the location you have it in. Calycanthus don't like very wet weather / soil. Though there's no treatment for the fungal problems you see now, you could hard prune it back 2/3rds after flowering then lift in Nov-March time to somewhere sunnier or with freer draining soil. Another popular choice is against a wall or fence as that gives a bit of shelter from wet weather.
Helpful info. Thank you. Actually I did lift it last autumn, from its very open, sunny position and potted it. And now I have it against the house wall, south facing. Must say..its not as bad as last year. I will repot it this autumn, into a freer draining compost, and prune it hard back after flowering as you suggest. We'll see if that helps it next year. Thanks @Hillier 😀👏

And this is most definitely on my wish list having seen it on your fab stand 👍🏼
