Agave getting ready to flower 🌸 It will soon cast a huge stalk, sometimes as high as a telephone poll, with hundreds of blossoms to try and attract pollinator bats. Their hope is they are pollinated and their seeds spread through the wind to new areas to make new agaves. The new agaves that sprout are actually genetically different, promoting biodiversity. #agave #maguey #agriculture #sembrador #fall #garden #gardening #gardener #farmer #farm #farming #nature #happy #plants #entrepreneur

Looks like a giant asparagus spear 😂 look forward to seeing the flowers when they open 😛
@kez001uk 😂😂 never thought of that you are right haha! Yes. The flowers are beautiful. Ive always admired them from far, but im going to try and smell its flowers this year ! Very curious lol
Will the mother plant die after the bloom? I can’t wait to see more photos of the bloom.
@janetandjim yes unfortunately, but it will give dozens of pups and thousands of seeds before doing so, really ends with a bang 😎
@honestgreensco googled it and it’s quite a thing of beauty when it opens! Hope it smells as good as it looks 😋
@honestgreensco please keep posting photo updates!
@janetandjim ill try to remember 😄
@kez001uk ill let you know haha, yes its so beautiful, the pollinators love it so it must smell like something nice haha
@honestgreensco like critter catnip 😂
@kez001uk 😂 have you seen the cartoon futurama? They had a cool smeloscope concept, i wish i could see what plants smelled with some glasses haha
Agave Americana var. Marginata. One of the largest agaves we have sold & planted. It can get up to 7' tall and wide. This one is 6' wide & 5' tall and we planted it last year. One of my favorite agaves as it was my 1st species i personally bought 😁 got hooked shortly after 😄 These agaves are native to mexico and the usa. #agaves #agaveplant #agave #summer #la #losangeles #california #gardening #landscaping #agavefarmer #garden #nature #happy #plants #entrepreneur #desertscapes #agavespirits
You can't see 'em in this photo, but I know this #native has some #wickedspines
@emch haha yeah, they get my pants all the time weeding 😄 but the leaf ends we cut because our clients are always in their gardens and we dont want them getting stabbed haha.
I have a non-variegated one here and named it Stabby Abby @honestgreensco -- been wondering how your garden grows this year with the nutty weather. How are the crops?
@emch very fitting 😂 everything on the farm, my garden and my clients gardens/farms are looking good 👍 alot of irrigation changes and alot of landscsping. grass is on the way out for diverse low water landscapes in my parts. on farms building alot of rock walls and planting water holding plants for fire prevention. alot of brush and tree cutting to make fire lines. its been crazy 🤪
@emch califonia has a year long fire season and drought is normal now, so alot of work needs to be done everywhere to adapt.
Crazy good, by the sound @honestgreensco
Don’t the spines grow back if you cut them? 🌞
@sunlovin hmm i dont think so, the agave usually prioritizes putting out growth on its new leaf. the leaf end spikes dont grow back from what i seen, but not sure if the leaf edges would respike if i did cut them lol
@sunlovin true, im alive and healthy , so no real complaints 😄👍
I’ve tried cutting spines off and they grew back! I don’t know if it’s certain species, I’ve done King Ferdinand and Dragon Toes but I just clipped the spines off I didn’t go into the leaf I didn’t want to ruin it so I was just curious if anyone did. Thanks. 🌞
@sunlovin yup it depends on species. smaller agaves that are more ornamental dont put out as much leaves or growth so they regrow the spikes to keep protecting itself. but americanas so huge they just put out a new leaf lol. i have both those agaves and they regrow em. same with oteroi's and titanotas . but it wont affect the leaf just make sure to cut just above leaf. the spikes are dead parts of leaves. i cut mine on small guys bc i like picking em up haha 😄
